REINTRODUCING SHOEMAKER TO SHOE WEARER
Over 25 years ago fate drew me into the footwear industry, and I was fortunate enough to play a major role in the rise of modern industrialized shoe making in Asia.
It has been interesting, exciting and endlessly challenging. Making shoes is about the craft and the knowledge; the art and the science; about fine leathers and complex mechanical machines. People who design custom footwear; people who make them; people who buy them and wear them.
Shoes used to be made for people, by other people. There was a personal relationship between the shoe wearer and the shoe maker. That relationship changed over time as the shoe making moved to family-owned factories and the selling to local retail shops. But still, there was a connection - from the factory to retailer and from retailer to customer.
Today, huge corporate factories in Asia make shoes for huge corporate brands, which sell to huge corporate retail chains. Company managers decide which shoes will be made and advertising campaigns tell customers what they will want. The customers - the people who actually buy and wear the shoes - have very little say in what is made or how it will look, feel and fit.
Shoe maker and shoe wearer never meet.
It shoudn't be this way.
For the past eight years the men and women of Otabo have been working to create, collect and invent the technologies necessary to bring shoe making and the customer together again. We have succeeded in combining technologies from other industries, other countries, and of our own invention and design, to build a unique process for delivering the finest custom shoes personally engineered for our customers. We make a pair of shoes just for you - a unique one for your left foot, another for your right.
I invite you to visit us and experience shoes in a new way, whether looking for custom golf shoes or business footwear. We want to make the best pair you have ever owned - made just for you, at Otabo.
